Local Transport

"Let nature be nature" is the motto of the oldest German National Park. That also means a good public transport network. The Bavarian Forest is easy to reach by public transport. Whether you are coming for a forest holiday, for a day trip to the main places of interest, a hiking tour of the peaks or returning from a walk to a particular place, you can safely leave your car at home. Often you can move about more easily than with a car, because you can walk around the mountains of the Bavarian Forest without wondering how to get back to your starting point – the Waldbahn and the National Park buses take care of it. Even going to the Czech Republic is not a problem!

The folded leaflet with the main timetables and connections can be obtained free of charge from all Tourist Information offices in the area or from
www.bayerwald-ticket.com

Waldbahn

The unmistakable green and yellow trains of the Waldbahn, which has been running since 1877 between Plattling and Bayerisch Eisenstein - and long before cars, is the connection to the world. Today it travels hourly to connect the Forest with the long distance junction at Plattling on the Danube. The Waldbahn is one of the most beautiful routes in Bavaria. It travels through a varied agricultural landscape to connect with the unique ‚Wild Wood’ in the Bavarian Forest National Park. ´

The Waldbahn travels between Bayerisch Eisenstein, Ludwigsthal, Zwiesel, Frauenau, Spiegelau and Grafenau. The main place to change buses and trains is Zwiesel.

You can get the exact timetable at www.bayerwald-ticket.com or from the Tourist Information offices.

Another tip: "kulTOUR"  is something special - the Waldbahn forms a stage for music and entertainment, from May to November on the last Sunday in the month.

Bus Services

Bus Services

What could be nicer? After an arduous hike up one of the Bavarian Forest mountains, sit in one of our National Park buses and travel back to your starting point.

In the Rachel-Lusen area, the Igel buses take you to the best walking destinations; in the Zwiesel area it is the Falkenstein bus. The place to change to the Igel buses , which only run in summer, is Spiegelau. From here, the environmentally friendly LPG buses go to Rachel, Lusen, Hans-Eisenmann-Haus and to Finsterau. The Falkenstein bus leaves from Zwiesel.

You can go on numerous walks here without a car, visit museums and get to the National Park Information Centres. Or cross the green roof of Europe by crossing the border – the bus connections take you into the Sumava National Park. You can even take your bike!

Information on the Igel bus network, prices, taking your bike, excursions, and recommended walks can be found at www.bayerwald-ticket.com and at the Tourist Information offices.

Bayerwald- and Bayernticket

Travel around with the Bayerwaldticket – the endless forest between Watzlik-Hain and the Forest Playground, Höllbachgspreng and Seelensteig, between moors and animal enclosures – easily and cheaply.

The Bayerwald-Ticket, which can be used on the buses and the Waldbahn, can be bought for only €7 per person per day, to travel around the Bavarian Forest National Park. 2 children or any number of the ticket holders’ own children, up to the age of 14, travel free.

This ticket allows you to travel for a whole day on 1,100 kilometres of Waldbahn, Oberpfalzbahn and many buses between Furth im Wald and Waldkirchen, between Regen and Bayerisch Eisenstein and in the National Park.

Whether you are doing cross country or alpine skiing or using the extensive paths of the Bavarian Forest National Park and Natural Park, the Bayerwald-Ticket will get you there and offers many advantages. The Bayerwald-Ticket PLUS even takes you as far as Plattling and Deggendorf.

Further information about the exact prices can be found at www.bayerwald-ticket.com or in the local Tourist Information offices.

Excursion Trips

Many places of interest in the Bavarian Forest National Park can be reached easily by public transport. The Waldbahn stops almost at the door of the Bavarian Forest National Park Information Centre "Haus zur Wildnis" in Ludwigsthal. The Glass Museum in Frauenau or the Forest Playground in Spiegelau are only a stone’s throw from the nearest railway station. In summer, using the Igel bus makes it easy to climb the Lusen, starting from the destination of the Igelbus above Waldhäuser. From the top, it is possible to descend to the Open Air Museum at Finsterau, which is worth a visit just for the inn there. From the museum, the bus brings you back to your starting point. One of the oldest protected areas in the Bavarian Forest, the "Höllbachgspreng" at the foot of the Great Falkenstein, can be reached with the Falkensteinbus several times a day. From the Scheuereck bus stop it is worth taking a walk to the primeval forest at Höllbachgspreng.

These are just a few of the many ideas for excursions – detailed information and suggested tours are in the appropriate brochure (Bayerwaldticket and Igelbus – Suggested Excursions, available from Tourist Information offices) or from www.bayerwald-ticket.com
